What is a Travelator?
Also known as a moving walkway or auto-walk, a travelator is a slow-moving conveyor mechanism that transports people across a horizontal or inclined plane over a short to medium distance. Travelators can be used by standing or walking on them, and are often installed in pairs going in opposite directions.

General Building Restrictions/ Requirements
For Singapore:
- Travelators should be designed as per Singapore Standard SS 626: 2017 – Code or Practice for Design, Installation and Maintenance of Escalators and Moving Walks and the Building Construction Authority (BCA)’s Building Control Act.
- Horizontal travelators can generally cater to inclinations between 0° to 6°.
- Ample free space must be provided at the upper and lower landings of the moving walk. 2.5m of unrestricted space for the exclusive transportation of human traffic must be doubled to 5m for travelators that are used to transport light goods.
- A special protection device should be installed for travelators when:
- Horizontal distance between the edge of handrail and wall or other objects do not meet a minimum of 8 cm.
- Floor space or cross layout safety distance between center of handrail and objects do not meet a minimum of 0.5 m.
